ChexSystems.
In plain English
ChexSystems is a consumer reporting agency, similar to a credit bureau, but for checking and savings accounts instead of loans. When you bounce checks, leave an account in the negative, or have an account closed by the bank for cause, that history can land in your ChexSystems file. Most banks pull a ChexSystems report when you apply for a new account, and a bad record can get your application denied. The good news: it is governed by the Fair Credit Reporting Act, so you have the right to one free report and the right to dispute anything that is wrong.
01Why it matters
A single unpaid overdraft from years ago can get you turned down for a basic checking account today, which is why a clean ChexSystems file matters more than most people realize.
02The math, step by step
Say you closed a checking account in 2022 while it was 80 dollars overdrawn and never paid it back. When you apply at a new bank, that bank pulls your ChexSystems report, sees the unpaid negative balance, and declines you. Your first step is to request your free report from ChexSystems, pay or dispute the item, and then apply at a bank that offers a 'second chance' checking account.
03What this is NOT
ChexSystems is not your credit score. Your credit score and credit report track loans and credit cards. ChexSystems tracks deposit-account behavior like overdrafts and forced account closures, and most lenders never see it.
