Lifetime Learning Credit.
In plain English
The Lifetime Learning Credit (LLC) is a tax break worth up to $2,000 per tax return for tuition and fees, claimed on Form 8863. Unlike the American Opportunity Tax Credit, it works for any year of schooling, including graduate school, part-time classes, and courses you take just to improve a job skill. It is not refundable, so it can lower your tax to zero but will not generate a refund on its own. There is no limit on the number of years you can claim it. For tax year 2025 the credit phases out as modified adjusted gross income rises from $80,000 to $90,000 (from $160,000 to $180,000 married filing jointly).
01Why it matters
If you are past your first four years of college, taking one class at a time, or going back to school as an adult, this is often the only education credit you still qualify for.
02The math, step by step
Say you spend $6,000 on graduate tuition in one year. The credit is 20% of your expenses up to $10,000, so 20% of $6,000 is $1,200 knocked off your tax bill. If your expenses were $10,000 or more, you would hit the $2,000 ceiling.
03What this is NOT
The Lifetime Learning Credit is per tax return, not per student, so a family with two students in school still gets at most $2,000. The AOTC is per student and partly refundable. You pick one credit per student per year, not both.
