In plain English

ACH stands for Automated Clearing House, the network that handles most everyday electronic bank transfers like direct deposit and bill pay. Standard ACH moves money in batches and can take one to several business days. Same-day ACH is a faster track on that same network that can settle eligible payments within the same business day, as long as they are submitted before the cutoff times and fall under the network's dollar cap per transfer. It is cheaper than a wire but slower and capped at a lower amount.

01Why it matters

Knowing whether a transfer is standard or same-day tells you when money will actually land, which matters when you are racing a bill due date or covering a low balance.

02The math, step by step

Your paycheck is processed through same-day ACH and submitted before the morning cutoff, so it lands in your account that afternoon instead of waiting until the next day. A standard ACH transfer started at the same time might not arrive until the following business day. Nacha, which runs the network, currently caps same-day ACH at $1 million per transfer (a limit in place since 2022 and scheduled to rise to $10 million in September 2027).

03What this is NOT

Do not confuse with A wire transfer

Same-day ACH is not a wire. ACH runs in scheduled batches with cutoff windows and a per-transfer dollar cap, and it is low-cost or free. A wire is a one-off, real-time bank-to-bank transfer with no batch cap but a fee. ACH is built for volume, wires for urgency and size.
