In plain English

Savings account withdrawal limits are restrictions on the number of certain withdrawals or transfers you can make from a savings or money market account in a statement cycle. These came from a federal rule called Regulation D, which historically capped certain transactions at six per month. On April 24, 2020, the Federal Reserve issued an interim final rule deleting that six-per-month limit from the savings-deposit definition, so banks are no longer required to enforce it. Many dropped the cap, but the rule only permits and does not require banks to suspend it, so some still impose their own limit and may charge a fee or convert your account if you go over.

01Why it matters

If your bank still enforces a cap, going over it can trigger fees or force your savings into a checking account, so it pays to know your specific bank's current policy rather than assume the old rule applies.

02The math, step by step

You move money out of savings eight times in one month. Under the old Regulation D limit that would have breached the six-transfer cap. Since the Fed deleted that limit in April 2020, whether anything happens depends on your bank: some now allow unlimited transfers, while others still charge an excess-transaction fee (for example around 10 dollars per extra withdrawal, an illustrative figure since each bank sets its own). Check your account agreement to know which applies.

03What this is NOT

Do not confuse with A federal law that still bans more than six withdrawals

The six-per-month cap is no longer a federal requirement. The Fed deleted it from the savings-deposit definition in April 2020. Any limit you face now is your bank's own policy, not a rule every bank must follow.
