The simple version
One figure is a level: how much money the firm looks after on the last day of the quarter. The other is a direction: how much clients put in minus how much they took out.
The level moves for two separate reasons. Clients adding or withdrawing, and the markets going up or down.
So a flat level is not evidence that nothing happened. It can mean market gains almost exactly replaced money that left.
The numbers
- Principal Financial Group reported assets under management of $785.0 billion at the end of the third quarter of 2026 against $784.3 billion a year earlier, which the release shows as a 0 percent change. Form 8-K exhibit filed with the SEC on October 26, 2026.
- In the same table, AUM net cash flow for the quarter was negative $10.7 billion, against positive $0.4 billion in the year-earlier quarter. The release puts the change at negative $11.1 billion.
- For the nine months, the same line reads negative $25.5 billion against negative $7.8 billion a year earlier, a change the release gives as negative $17.7 billion.
- Assets under administration, a wider figure, was $1,840.3 billion against $1,792.5 billion, up 3 percent. One of the release's own highlights notes that assets under management of $785 billion is included in assets under administration of $1.8 trillion, so the two are not additive.
- Net income attributable to the company for the quarter was $632 million, or $2.91 per diluted share. The release also prints three separate non-GAAP earnings figures for the same quarter, which is a different subject from this article and not something we work through here.
- Period note: the level comparison is year over year, end of quarter against end of quarter. The negative $10.7 billion covers the quarter and the negative $25.5 billion covers nine months. We do not subtract figures covering different spans, and nothing below does.
- Read in the filing itself at the SEC on October 27, 2026. Accession 0001104659-26-118774.
Why a level can hide a direction
A firm earns its fee on the level, usually as a share of the average balance. So the level is the revenue line and it is what gets quoted.
What clients decided shows up only in the flow line. Money leaving and a rising market push the level in opposite directions, and in a good year for markets the second can cover the first completely.
Which is why the flow line is the one that tells you about the business rather than about the market. It is also usually several pages into the release.
The actual math on how much of the total left
Put the quarter's outflow against the size of the total it came out of. Negative $10.7 billion against $785.0 billion is 1.4 percent of the total in three months.
Across the first three quarters the figure is negative $25.5 billion, which is 3.2 percent of that same total. Both percentages are ours; the dollar figures are the firm's.
We are not working out what the markets added. The release does not split the level change into market gains and client money, so that figure is not available and we have not produced one.
What this means
If you want to know whether clients are staying, the level will not tell you. Find the flows line and read its sign.
The same logic applies to a fund you hold. A fund whose assets look stable through a rising market may be losing holders, and persistent outflows are what eventually force a fund to merge or close.
The transferable habit is to separate a stock from a flow in any financial statement. One is a photograph on a single day, the other is what happened over a span, and confusing them is how a flat number hides a trend.
What this is NOT
This article explains the difference between the level of assets a money manager reports and the net money moving in or out, using Principal Financial Group's third-quarter 2026 Form 8-K exhibit filed on October 26, 2026 and read on October 27, 2026 as the worked example. It is not investment advice about that company, about any fund, or about any retirement plan, it is not a recommendation to buy, sell, hold or move money anywhere, and we do not give personalized advice. It is not a claim about why money left, because the release does not say and we have not guessed. It is not a statement about the company's results, which include several earnings measures this article does not work through. The two percentages in the math section are our division of the company's figures and are not figures the company reported. We have not estimated how much of the level change came from markets rather than client money, because the release does not break that out. The level comparison covers twelve months and the flow figures cover three months and nine months respectively; nothing here subtracts across those spans. For how the fee-earning portion of a pool can differ from the headline total, and for how fees move with the market, see our existing pieces on those two questions rather than treating this one as covering them. This is not a political endorsement or criticism of anyone.
