The AI Boom Has a Bill and It Arrives With Your Next Laptop.

Memory chips are the part of the AI boom that reaches your receipt. Consumer memory prices jumped as much as 89 percent in a single quarter, PC prices are projected to rise 17 percent, and the cheapest laptops are disappearing. Here is the chain, decoded.

The simple version

Every computer, phone, and game console needs memory chips, and memory chips are in a historic shortage. Research firm SigmaIntel measured consumer memory prices rising as much as 89% in the second quarter of 2026 alone, on top of increases in the quarter before.

The cause is not a factory fire or a pandemic. It is a choice. The AI datacenter buildout pays far more for a specialized kind of memory, so manufacturers moved production toward it, and the ordinary memory in your laptop got scarce. The bill for that choice is arriving at retail now.

The numbers

  • Consumer memory chip prices rose as much as 89% quarter over quarter in Q2 2026, with common laptop and phone memory types up 49% to 89% and solid-state storage up 54% to 103% depending on type (SigmaIntel, as reported)
  • Research firm TrendForce projects memory contract prices rising another 13% to 18% in Q3 2026, calling the slowdown from Q2's roughly 60% jumps a sign that buyers hit their limit, not that supply improved (TrendForce)
  • Gartner estimates combined memory and storage prices up 130% by the end of 2026, lifting average PC prices about 17% and cutting global PC shipments 10.4%, the steepest drop in over a decade (Gartner)
  • Gartner also projects the sub-$500 entry-level PC effectively disappearing by 2028 (Gartner)
  • HP disclosed that memory and storage now account for about 35% of the cost of building a PC this year, up from roughly 15% to 18% (HP, Q1 2026 earnings call)

The chain from the datacenter to your checkout

AI systems run on a specialized product called high-bandwidth memory, which stacks many memory chips vertically and wires them together. It is enormously fast and enormously wasteful of factory capacity: each gigabyte of it consumes roughly three times the silicon of the standard memory in a laptop.

Memory manufacturing is dominated by three companies: Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron. When AI buyers pay premium prices for high-bandwidth memory, those three shift their factories toward it, because that is what any business does with its scarcest resource. Every wafer that becomes AI memory is a wafer that does not become laptop memory.

Scarce laptop memory means PC and phone makers bid against each other for what remains, which is the price spike in the numbers above. Then it flows one more step: memory is now more than a third of the cost of building a PC, so the manufacturer either eats the increase or passes it on, and the projections say it gets passed on.

The last link is the cruelest one. Price increases land hardest at the bottom of the market, because a fixed dollar increase is a much larger share of a cheap laptop than an expensive one. That is why the forecast has the sub-$500 PC disappearing: the memory inside it stops fitting the price on the outside.

The Real Cost lens on a household's devices

Put the projection on a normal family's replacement cycle, with every assumption stated.

  • A $800 laptop at the projected 17% increase costs about $136 more
  • A household replacing two laptops and two phones over the next couple of years, on an illustrative $2,800 of devices, pays roughly $480 more at the same percentage (assumption: Gartner's 17% average applied across the basket; phone increases may differ)
  • The increase is not a one-time event if the shortage runs to 2027 or beyond, as the manufacturers themselves warn. It is the new base price
  • The practical lever a household controls is timing and specification: buying before a needed replacement fails, and buying the memory actually needed rather than the maximum offered, are both worth more than usual in a rising market

That last bullet is as far as this article goes toward advice, and it is about timing a purchase you already planned, not about any product or brand. The larger point is the mechanism: a spending boom in one corner of the economy is repricing a product in every household, and the connection runs through three companies' factory schedules.

What this means

The AI boom is usually covered as a stock market story, and we have covered it that way ourselves. This is the other side: the same demand that moved the chip stocks is moving the price of the machine you type on, in the opposite direction from the usual story of electronics getting cheaper every year.

When a price that has fallen your whole life starts rising, the reflex is to wait for normal to return. The manufacturers are saying, in their own filings and forecasts, that the wait may run years. Whether they are right is unknowable, but their capacity decisions are the mechanism, and the mechanism is public.
