IRS Free File.
In plain English
IRS Free File is a partnership between the IRS and several tax software companies that lets eligible taxpayers prepare and electronically file their federal return for free. If your adjusted gross income (AGI) is at or below the program's annual limit, you can use guided commercial software at no cost through the IRS website. Each partner sets its own extra rules, which can include age, state, or military status. If your income is above the limit, you can still use Free File Fillable Forms, a free electronic version of the paper forms with no guided help.
01Why it matters
Filing a federal return through paid software or a preparer can cost real money every year, and Free File does the same job for free if you qualify, while still letting you claim valuable credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit. Over a working lifetime, skipping prep fees adds up to thousands of dollars you keep and can invest.
02The math, step by step
Say your adjusted gross income is below the Free File limit. You go to the IRS Free File page, pick a partner whose rules you meet, and prepare and e-file your federal return for free, including credits like the Child Tax Credit. If you had paid for software or a storefront preparer instead, that could cost anywhere from tens to a few hundred dollars, so the free route keeps that money in your pocket. For the 2026 filing season the guided-software cutoff is an AGI of $89,000 or less based on your 2025 income.
03What this is NOT
Free File is not the IRS doing your return. It is free commercial software you operate yourself, or fillable forms you complete by hand online. A human preparing the return for you is VITA, a separate program.
