In plain English

VITA stands for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance. It is an IRS-backed program where IRS-certified volunteers prepare and file basic federal tax returns for free at community sites like libraries, schools, and community centers. It is aimed at people who earn below a set income limit, people with disabilities, and taxpayers with limited English. A related program, Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE), offers similar free help focused on people age 60 and older. Volunteers can handle common situations like W-2 wages and the Earned Income Tax Credit, but not complex business returns.

01Why it matters

Paid tax prep can cost a couple hundred dollars, which is a real hit for someone on a tight budget, and VITA does the same basic return for free while helping you claim refundable credits you might otherwise miss.

02The math, step by step

Say you earn modest wages, have one W-2, and qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit. A VITA volunteer can prepare and e-file your federal return at no cost and make sure you claim that credit, which can be worth thousands as a refund. To use it, you bring a photo ID, Social Security cards, and your tax documents to a local VITA site. The income cutoff is generally around $69,000 or less, and you can find sites with the IRS VITA locator tool.

03What this is NOT

Do not confuse with IRS Free File

VITA is not the same as IRS Free File. VITA gives you a trained human who prepares the return for you in person. Free File is do-it-yourself online software. VITA generally has a lower income limit and can help if you are not comfortable filing on your own.
