In plain English

A romance scam is fraud built on a fake romantic relationship. The scammer creates an appealing profile on a dating app or social media, invests weeks or months in affection and attention, and always has a reason never to meet or video chat. Once trust is deep, the requests begin: a medical emergency, travel costs to finally visit, a customs fee, or a lucrative investment they want to share. The emotional bond is the tool, which is what makes these scams so painful and so effective, and being caught in one reflects the manipulation, not a lack of sense.

01Why it matters

Romance scams exploit real emotional connection, so the losses are both financial and personal, and recognizing the pattern, deep online affection that never meets and eventually asks for money, is the key defense.

02The math, step by step

An attentive match professes strong feelings quickly but always has an excuse not to meet or video chat. After weeks of daily messages, a sudden crisis needs money wired urgently. The affection was the setup; a partner who cannot ever meet yet needs money is the defining warning sign.

03What this is NOT

Do not confuse with A real long-distance relationship

It is not just distance. The markers of a romance scam are refusing to meet or video chat, rushing emotional intimacy, and eventually asking for money or steering you to an investment, patterns a genuine relationship does not follow.
