A Lender Shifted 8.3 Billion Dollars of Holdings From One Label to Another in July. By the End of September Those Same Holdings Had Gone From an 8 Million Gain to 222 Million Against Them.

Two labels decide whether a lender re-values what it holds. Under one, the holdings are re-valued every quarter and the swing lands in net worth rather than in reported income. Under the other, they are not re-valued at all. One lender moved 8.3 billion dollars of mortgage holdings from the first label to the second in July, when they showed an 8 million dollar gain. By the end of September the same holdings showed 222 million against them.

The simple version

A lender that buys long-dated holdings has to assign each one to a group when it buys it. The assignment is a statement about intent, and it decides how the holding is carried afterwards.

In one group the holding is re-valued each quarter. The amount it has moved does not pass through reported income; it lands in net worth directly.

In the other group the holding is carried at its cost, adjusted over its life, and is not re-valued. A move in what it would fetch today does not show up in either place.

The numbers

  • M&T Bank Corporation reported quarterly net income of $775 million, or $5.04 of diluted earnings per common share, for the third quarter of 2026 (M&T Bank Corporation, Form 8-K Exhibit 99.1, news release dated October 16, 2026, accession 0000036270-26-000057)
  • The release states that, reflecting rising interest rates, accumulated other comprehensive income declined $588 million in the recent quarter (same release)
  • It states that in July 2026 the Company transferred $8.3 billion of residential mortgage-backed securities from the available-for-sale portfolio to the held-to-maturity portfolio with net unrealized gains of $8 million (same release)
  • It states that unrealized losses on those transferred securities at September 30, 2026 were $222 million, or $165 million net of tax (same release)
  • The company's annual report states that investments in debt securities are classified as held to maturity and stated at amortized cost when management has the positive intent and ability to hold them to maturity, and that other debt securities are classified as available for sale and stated at fair value with unrealized changes in fair value included in accumulated other comprehensive income (M&T Bank Corporation, Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2025, filed February 18, 2026)
  • Investment securities on the balance sheet were $38,552 million at the end of the third quarter, against $38,728 million at the end of the second and $36,559 million a year earlier (same release)
  • Net interest income was $1,793 million against $1,792 million in the prior quarter and $1,761 million a year earlier, and the net interest margin was 3.65 percent against 3.70 percent and 3.69 percent (same release)
  • Total assets were $218,860 million, loans were $143,296 million and deposits were $166,777 million at the end of the third quarter (same release)
  • Tangible capital for common was 7.85 percent, against 8.07 percent in the prior quarter and 8.79 percent a year earlier (same release)

What each label actually does

The first label says the holding might be sold before it comes due. Because that is possible, what it would fetch today matters, so it is re-valued each quarter.

The re-valuation does not touch reported income. It goes into a separate line inside net worth, which is why a quarter can show healthy income while net worth falls.

The second label says the intent is to keep the holding until it comes due. On that basis today's resale figure is treated as beside the point, and the holding sits at its cost, adjusted over its life rather than marked to today's figure.

Moving a holding from the first group to the second therefore changes what gets reported about it from then on. The disclosure of the move, and of what the holdings are worth, is how a reader can still see it.

The actual math on 8 and 222

At the July move the transferred holdings showed net gains of 8 million dollars. At the end of September the same holdings showed 222 million against them, or 165 million after tax.

That is a turn of 230 million dollars on one book of holdings across roughly a quarter, which is our arithmetic on two figures the release prints side by side.

Set that next to the quarter's reported income of 775 million and the separate 588 million fall in that net worth line. Three figures, one quarter, and they are not telling the same story.

What the release does not say is what the 222 million would have done to that net worth line had the holdings stayed in the first group. The disclosure gives the figures, not that counterfactual, and this article does not compute one.

What this means

For anyone reading a lender's results, the income line and the net worth line answer different questions, and holdings re-valuation is one of the main reasons they diverge. Reading only the first one misses it.

The label is also a decision rather than a fact about the holding. Nothing about a mortgage bond changed in July; what changed was the group it sits in and therefore what gets reported about it.

None of which is concealed. This lender printed the transfer, the figure at the time of the move and the figure at quarter end, which is exactly the material a reader needs to follow it.

What this is NOT

This article explains what the held-to-maturity and available-for-sale labels do to how a lender's holdings are carried and reported, using M&T Bank Corporation's third quarter 2026 news release filed as Exhibit 99.1 to a Form 8-K with a period of report of October 16, 2026, and the accounting policy stated in its Form 10-K for 2025, both read on October 16, 2026. It is not a view on that company, its stock, its management, or any lender, and it is not a recommendation to buy, sell, or hold anything, including any deposit, bond, or fund. It is not a claim that the company did anything improper or unusual: transferring holdings between those groups is a disclosed, permitted action, the company disclosed this one along with the figures on both dates, and that disclosure is the reason this article can describe it. It is not a claim about the financial condition or safety of this or any institution, and it is not a forecast of interest rates, holdings values, or anyone's results. The 230 million figure is our subtraction of two figures the release prints, labelled as such, and the article deliberately does not estimate what the outcome would have been under the other label, because the release does not state it. It is not a full account of the accounting rules for these groups, which contain conditions and consequences this article does not cover, including how gains or losses already recorded at the time of a transfer are treated afterwards. This is not a political endorsement or criticism of anyone.
